Hello Gung sensei,
How was your vacation? I enjoyed on-day retreat at Columbia,SC, just for changing my living environment.
As I mentioned at Conversation Hour, We, Kendo Club and Aikido Club,are scgeduled to hold joint Bonen-kai at this weekend.
Since Kendo and Aikido have common ground based on Japanese original mind-body marshal arts, we are very much looking forward to have an opportunity to exchange and
share the Japanese cultural event.
We are welcome anybody who has an interest in, to enhance the gathering and spread a community.
The program is, tentatively ,to be introduction of both clubs and self introduction of participating members and free Q and A to Clubs and to members.
Some cultural program. I will plan to introduce the most popular Japanese folk and new music songs. Any idea is welcome !

Retrospectives from Kaz
Hello Gung sensei,
It was worth for me to see how students react to Kendo, and I felt the highlight was a bout with a Nagoya exchange student.
All American students seemed to be amazed to see a small girl could challenge to fight in a brave manner.
I am thinking that must be a real nonverbal effective impression, especially to the future female Kenshi ! And I thank you for your programming arrangement. We can apply that demo style for our upcoming events.

Japanese Party
hi, herbie:)and jacob:) ~~how are you?? we(maho and yayoi) are planning a Japanese party on friday, because we want to make more friends who in Japanese class. Could you invite other people in the Japanese class? MUI, LIP, and IME for Windows Vista
I commented on one of the earlier posts about this problem I was having with installing a Japanese language package on my computer.
The demonstration video will only work for you if you have Windows Vista Ultimate or Vista Enterprise because only those versions support MUIs (Multilingual User Interface). If you're like me and you have Vista Home Premium then you can download a LIP (Language Interface Pack). Unfortunately, though, Microsoft's website doesn't have a Japanese LIP and it's difficult to find one someplace else.
The solution to this problem instead of surfing the internet aimlessly looking for a LIP to download is to install an IME (Input Method Editor). There was a post to this blog earlier with directions on how to do this, but I think it might have been overlooked so I'll post the link here again.
The following link will show you step by step how to install an IME. Despite what the website says, I didn't need my Vista CD in order for the installation to be successfull.

Information on Anime and Kendo Clubs / Help on Hiragana
The Anime club meets wednesdays in the Russel Union, usually from 6:30 to 9. Because of issues with room reservations, we don't have a single room this semester, so the time and room are sent through Facebook each week.

Installing Japanese (and other) languages in XP
====== TEXT VERSION! ======
1. Put your windows XP install disk in the DVD-CD drive
2. Go to start
3. Go to control Panel
4. Press Date, Time, region and language options
5. Press Regional and Language options
6. Press the Language tab
7. Press the check box next to East Asian Language
8. Press Apply and install!
You may have to restart your computer, but it will be fine! After that you're done with your windows XP disk!

Any Suggestions for Manga and Anime to add to our Library Collection?
Dear Japanese Manga & Anime Fans out there - especially Herbie-san!
Below is a letter from one of our library liasons. After speaking to him about the possibility of starting a library collection of Japanese language materials, he has emailed me back soliciting suggestions along the lines of Manga and Anime.

I finally got a chance to talk to Jonathan Harwell today and he said there should be no special problems ordering Manga and Anime, aside from the concern that some Manga might be in fragile formats that wouldn't last long after normal library use. But we can try to find hardbacks and bigger graphic novel versions that should hold up better. The other problem we might run into is not being able to find a publisher or distributer that sells what we need in an American dollar price or doesn't have the item in stock or print.
I forgot to ask you last Friday, but you are interested in finding material in Japanese, not translations or American versions, correct? It seems like most Anime dvds come in multiple languages these days, but we would need to make sure the Manga is in the language you want.
Did you have any specific titles in mind to order? I used to collect comics and read some of Dark Horse's English language Manga, but I really haven't kept up with Manga and Anime since I started graduate school in '97. Give me an idea of what kind of things you are looking for and I'll help you search.

Watch out for tricky Hiragana!
Here's a helpful hint - Try pausing and using your fingers to trace over the computer screen while pronouncing the Hiragana.
Another student suggested - Try closing your eyes and trying to draw the Hiragana in the air while pronoucing it to commit them to memory.

After we talked about this in class I went and searched around in google and found this website:

But Anyways, as I said, they have personalized Hanko. You can personalize your Hanko with the characters for your name, and you can also design it (the material, the font, the ink, and the case in which it comes).
The price is not that bad. for non- costumized Hanko the price ranges from $8.98-$9.99 (they have a variety of pre-made popular words and names, and my name Ray happened to be on the list :) and the costumized ones are going to be a little more on the expensive side, but still cheaper than other websites I found (the next cheapest I found was about $75 O_o).
The only catch is that the products are shipped from Japan, so the shipping and handling fee is $16.
